Bells of St.Martin’s:
Details of the 8 Bells at Chelsfield are shown on the Loves Guide to the Church Bells of Kent website.
Our 6 bells were augmented to 8 in January 2009. The new bells were dedicated on Sunday 10 October 2010. Hear our Bells.
Chelsfield have an active band of ringers, the bellringers ring before our 10am and 6.30pm Sunday services; they also ring for weddings and special peals for particular occasions.
During Covid restrictions, the number of bells that can be rung is restricted. All ringing is pre-booked rota - please contact the Tower Captain for further details.
There were 5 peals, one of which was in memory of John S Barnes, ringer at congregation member at St Martin’s for nearly 60 years. There were 15 quarter peals rung during 2019, one of which was in memory of a past Tower Captain, Nicholas Martin, and another was an 80th birthday compliment to Ann Blatcher, another long-standing ringer and Lay Reader Emeritus of this church.
The tower always welcomes visiting ringers and takes part in the Heritage Open Days weekends, normally in September. We gave talks and demonstrations. In 1999 the band won both the District Striking Competition and the Call Change Competition, the latter for the first time in many years. .
If you are interested in learning to ring, particularly younger people, please contact:
The Tower Captain Philippa Rooke 01689 812236 email@example.com
Our normal ringing practice evening is on Mondays from 8pm - 9.30pm. Attendance at ringin practice is currently by pre-booking (see above).
We normally have an Annual ringing outing in September each year, in 2019 it was to Kent.
Chelsfield is in the Lewisham District of the Kent Association of Change Ringers. In 2019 we won the Lewisham District Call Changing Competition as well as the Method Competition and repeated the Method Competition win in 2020.
Winning the District Method Competition entitles a band to go through to the Kent County 6 Bell Final which we have done 15 times in the last 20 years, winning on a number of occasions including a hat trick of wins in 2014/2015/2016.
In 2009 just after we augmented to eight bells we were the leading tower for Quarter Peals in the District with a total of 34.
